Why Your ERP Needs Temporal Data

With Know It now® Management, great emphasis is placed on having real-time and accurate information available in order to make sound business decisions in an efficient manner. But what happens when you need to know what your business’s data looked like last week? How about last month? Last year? With all of this real-time data being stored, is there even a way to find out what the data looked like at some point in the past?

Yes, there is! That’s where using Carillon® ERP and pairing it with SQL Server 2017 comes in to play. We are talking about temporal data tables, which will be explained in a minute.

This is what you are probably used to:

Before temporal tables, when a user ran a query against a data table, the result that SQL would show was only the most recent record. This was after any and all updates. The user would never see if or how the data had changed from the past. Unfortunately, if you had any questions about the data history, this fact usually proved to be problematic. On the other hand, this all changed when SQL Server introduced temporal tables in the 2017 update.

Here’s your new reality with temporal data:

Temporal tables are a form of record-keeping. They allow a user to find data stored on tables at any point in time. This is opposed to only seeing current data. The temporal changes keep track of all the changes that occur on a table. In addition to seeing a record of each individual change that was made, when you are using Carillon you will be able to see when the change was made and who made the change.

Temporal data tables are an incredibly valuable asset to your organization. If you have any questions or would like to discuss implementing the use of these tables, contact our expert team at Carillon and we will happily assist you!
